Did last week’s weather affect your walking?

Not really. I walked indoors instead of outside.

Have you seen results since beginning this challenge?

I am feeling healthier since I started the challenge.

Do you anticipate keeping up with your regimen after the challenge ends?

Yes. I will continue I just might add some variations to it.

Bernard K. – Downtown

Did last week’s weather affect your walking?

Yes, my steps were slightly down last week in comparison to some other weeks but I did walk in the mall on a number of the extremely hot days.

Have you seen results since beginning this challenge?

In my case, if I don’t walk I do not feel as well. Since my job is indoors at a desk, I find it relaxing to be outside and it helps relieves leg cramps.

Do you anticipate keeping up with your regimen after the challenge ends?

ABSOLUTELY!

Leon L. – Airport Corridor

Did last week’s weather affect your walking?

Since I walk at our local mall I found the heat no problem

Have you seen results since beginning this challenge?

I find that I have more energy and have lost several pounds of unwanted weight.

Do you anticipate keeping up with your regimen after the challenge ends?

I do anticipate keeping up my walking once the walk challenge ends as it is healthy and has so many benefits.

Pam Z. – Oakland

Did last week’s weather affect your walking?

Yes.

Have you seen results since beginning this challenge?

Yes.

Do you anticipate keeping up with your regimen after the challenge ends?

Yes.

Congratulations!

The best part? You can win, too. As an incentive to keep walking and logging your steps, we will give away prizes to those who enter at least one step into the system each week. Enter your steps by 9:oo A.M. each Friday morning. Winners will be chosen at random each Friday. It’s never too late to sign up to participate.

Keep challenging yourself and win!

Sarah P. – Downtown

How did you hear about the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I participated in the challenge last year and I also read about it on twitter.

Are you participating as part of a group or is this a personal Challenge?

This challenge is personal but I walk with other people every day that are not part of the challenge.

What are you hoping to achieve by participating in the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

A free t-shirt Really though I am hoping to make my personal goals which is to walk over 10,000 steps every day in the month of June, July and August. So far I think I missed only 1 or 2 days.

Dennis S. – Airport Corridor

How did you hear about the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I have been participating in the challenge for the last few years.

Are you participating as part of a group or is this a personal Challenge?

This is a personal challenge, but I do walk often with my wife, Cheryl.

What are you hoping to achieve by participating in the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I hope to maintain good health and hopefully take off a few extra pounds.

Francesmary M. – Oakland

How did you hear about the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

From Pattye Strager at CMU.

Are you participating as part of a group or is this a personal Challenge?

This is a personal challenge but next year my daughter wants to take part.

What are you hoping to achieve by participating in the 2011 Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I am trying to make it to at least 10,000 steps every day, preferably 12,000 steps. Throughout the day I look at my pedometer and if it’s on the low side, I figure out a way to get more steps in. If by dinner time I haven’t made it to 7000 steps, we’re out trolling the neighborhood so I can at least make it to 10,000.

Each and every Friday during the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge, all three locations will choose one weekly winner. Here are last week’s winners along with their thoughts on the Challenge.

Lisa S. – Downtown

Where/when do you walk most?

I walk the most on the weekends. I live and work Downtown so I mostly walk in town and on the North Shore.

Have you changed your daily habits to log more steps?

Well, because I don’t even own a car, I can honestly say I walk to and from work, but that isn’t very many steps at all! I try to do the treadmill before work in the morning and walk outside in the evenings.

How would you encourage someone to walk more?

That’s a hard one because we are such a sedentary society. At lunchtime, just grab a co-worker and say, let’s take a walk.

Jacque H. – Airport Corridor

Where/when do you walk most?

During Lunch Break and then in the evening around the neighborhood and track.

Have you changed your daily habits to log more steps?

Yes, I walk more often especially in the evening during the summer.

How would you encourage someone to walk more?

Get a buddy to walk with.

Tom W. – Oakland

Where/when do you walk most?

I actually run more than I walk. My favorite place to run is along the trails of Schenley Park. The trails are really well maintained and it’s always great to be out in nature. I run Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Because of the heat, I try to get out as early as possible and currently run between 6.5 and 7.5 miles. On occasion, I’ll also run on the trail on the South Side. In addition to running, I try to walk our two Briards a couple times a week. It helps keep them healthy and adds to my steps.

Have you changed your daily habits to log more steps?

To some degree I have changed a few things. I tend to park further away from stores to provide more steps. Also, I’ve been using a stand behind lawn mower as opposed to using our rider. Lately, the grass has been needing to be cut weekly, so I can rack up a lot of steps. I’m a pretty active person and it’s rare that I don’t walk at least 10K steps just doing what I do in a normal day.

How would you encourage someone to walk more?

That’s a tough one! I think one of the things to do is invite someone to walk with me. It’s a good time to simply chat. It also helps to have a bit of a reward, like walking someplace to get a cold treat or walking to and from lunch. One of the things I’ve done to keep me motivated to run is logging my runs. I use a heart rate monitor, which helps me push myself even harder. It’s interesting to look back a year ago when I was struggling to run two miles.

Each and every Friday during the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge, all three locations will choose one weekly winner. Here are last week’s winners along with their thoughts on the Challenge.

Kathy M. – Airport Corridor

Have you seen an improvement in your health/body since beginning the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I can tell from tracking my steps that I tend to push myself a little harder to get my numbers up. I can’t say I have seen a physical change yet, but mentally I tend to choose the healthier lifestyle whether it be fruit instead of carbs, or taking the parking space that is further from the door.

Do you think you will continue walking more after you complete the Challenge?

Yes! I have always enjoyed walking but haven’t been able in the past 3-4 years because of pregnancy and having 2 children under the age of 3 and my husband and I both working full time, and he was going to school full time on top of everything else. He recently graduated, so I took this opportunity to join the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge to help me get back into the grove.

Did you have a goal in mind when you signed up for the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I work a desk job so my goal in the beginning was to hit 7000 steps a day. I have made that goal twice so far! Once I hit that goal more often, I will up it by 500 steps till I reach 10,000.

Have you seen an improvement in your health/body since beginning the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

Yes! I’ve been walking more since starting the program and I feel great.

Do you think you will continue walking more after you complete the Challenge?

Hard to say if I will keep walking so much after the program. It’s a great incentive to improve my score!

My goal: get more steps than my wife! (Or, at least to make it close.) Also, hoping to get into the top 200 of walkers.

Have you seen an improvement in your health/body since beginning the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

I have definitely seen an improvement in my health and body composition since beginning the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge. I’ve been using the pedometer as a supplement and impetus to add to some other health tools I’ve been using like Spark People, Plus 3 Network, and Supreme 90 Day to help me improve my cycling performance and general health.

Do you think you will continue walking more after you complete the Challenge?

Both my wife and I do little things to try to improve our step counts daily, we participated last year and found that even after the challenge was over, we would attempt to increase our step counts to help with fundraising we are doing for World Bicycle Relief and the International Mountain Biking Association through Plus 3 Network.

Did you have a goal in mind when you signed up for the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge?

My goal when I signed up for the Ready, Set, Walk! Challenge? was to participate in a healthy activity that would serve as additional motivation to help me reach my health goals. Currently, that includes improving my strength and endurance for general cycling and some mountain bike races I would like to compete in for fun in the fall. I also want to reach a goal weight of 150 lbs in the fall. I’m at 172 lbs now, down from 210 lbs in fall of 2009 and completed my first metric century by bike in May.
